about

An old track from 1997, released in 2008 on the "Collection 4: Transforming" CDR compilation on Databloem, and on "Die Welt Ist Klang: A Tribute To Pete Namlook" 8CD Box in 2013. Previously unavailable as download. (Artwork based on a creative commons image courtesy of corenominal.org)

Back in the days, I was making electronic music with my Atari Mega4 ST (as a sequencer running Cubase) and Roland DJ-70 sampler with 4 MB of RAM. 4 MB meant about 44 seconds of sampling time in CD quality, so you had to be economical and not use too long sounds, and instead use the built-in envelopes etc of the sampler. 4 MB meant that you would store each track on up to three 1.44MB floppy disks per project. On this track I used only very short percussion sounds and only one string sound, so all sounds fit on one floppy disk. On other tracks it could be challenging, and if I had long samples that I wanted to use I had to play them from cassette live during the recording (such as the sampled speech on "Siberian Train").
I mainly sampled the sounds from other music I had on CD, or from sample CDs that sometimes came with music production magazines. Downloading from the net was difficult due to the slow internet connections in those days. The string sound in this track I sampled from a break in a drum'n'bass track that I had on tape, which resulted in some slight noise and sway in the character of the sound and a very nice analog feel.

My Atari broke down in late 1997, so I only used this setting for my music production in less than two years, but the way of working laid the foundation for projects to come, and the sampler and its floppy disks still works. I still use many of the sounds that I sampled during these years, and I still work a lot with sampling from cassette tapes in order to get a more analog feel of the sound.
