about

"Casablanca Nights should serve as an inspiration to producers everywhere as an example of how to do an “And Friends” record the right way. For the rest of us, it’s a thrilling blast of heartbreak beats and sweet club emotion."
AllMusic

"Like the Italo disco forefathers he strives to emulate, Gothenburg, Sweden producer Johan Agebjörn works best as the man behind the curtain, mainly acting as writer/producer for diminutive Eurobeat revivalist Sally Shapiro. Branching out on Casablanca Nights, his second LP, Agebjörn applies a similar songwriting method, utilizing a dozen guest vocalists to help fill out his signature sound. Songs like "Casablanca Nights" and "Alice" help give Shapiro some weighty scope, as Lovelock (aka Steve Moore of Zombi) and first wave Italo vocalist Fred Ventura complement Agebjörn's highly conceptual beats and grooves. It's apparent on the vocoder-assisted "So Fine All the Time" (featuring Legowelt and Wolfram) and the glitch-pop-y "Stranger (Chill Remix)" that Agebjörn has a meticulous way of writing throwback music. But it's the dream-stately "Memories of Satie," co-written, co-produced and co-sung with Montreal's CFCF, that fully demonstrates Agebjörn's potential. Casablanca Nights proves that Johan Agebjörn works well with others, a notion he will hopefully explore more in the future."

After the release of the second Sally Shapiro album "My Guilty Pleasure" in 2009, I felt my production ideas had reached a dead end, and I needed to bring some fresh air into my disco productions. As a way to expand my sound, I started to collaborate with a lot of producers and singers, and the result was this album "Casablanca Nights" released in 2011 on Paper Bag Records. This process paved the way for the production on the third Sally Shapiro album "Somewhere Else" (2013), that also includes a few production collaborations with Le Prix (Johan Emmoth). So in a way, "Casablanca Nights" is the missing link between the second and the third Sally Shapiro album.

This expanded edition includes 7 previously unreleased instrumentals, the re-recording of "Casablanca Nights" with Spanish 80s disco singer Alan Cook on vocals (released as a 12" maxi with remixes on Disco Evolution), Anton Orlov's "Energy remix" of "Alice" (also released by Disco Evolution on the "Alice" 12" maxi where the artist was named Fred Ventura vs Sally Shapiro), Majiker's remix of "Le Noir Et Le Blanc Sur Le Piano" (previously on the iTunes edition only), and finally a completely new remix of "Casablanca Nights" by Glinder, which is the new trance alias of my musical collaborator Mikael Ögren.

The original mix of "Le Noir Et Le Blanc Sur Le Piano" has been replaced with a previously unreleased extended version of the same song. This extended mix was made upon request by Zyx for their compilation "Italo Disco New Generation Vol. 3", but in the end they used the extended version of Sally Shapiro "If It Doesn't Rain" for that compilation instead.

Thank you to all the great singers, co-producers, co-songwriters and remixers involved on this album - amazing memories!
